Goucher College seeks a new president with the leadership experience and ability, characteristics, and credentials to inspire and guide the next era of success for one of the nation’s most distinguished liberal arts colleges. The new president will be expected to engage the campus in identifying the priorities and securing the necessary resources to define a path to success in a challenging external environment.
Founded in 1885 as the Woman’s College of Baltimore, Goucher College today is a selective, private, residential, coeducational liberal arts college of about 1,500 undergraduates and 770 students in graduate and professional studies across the United States and around the world. The College has had a history of innovation since its founding. It was the first college in the United States to teach medically related sciences to women and it pioneered physical education for women. The college also was among the first in the country to introduce independent study, field work, early admissions, accelerated college programs, and individualized majors, and it was the second in Maryland selected to host a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Goucher developed one of the first political science internship programs in the country and later expanded internships to all academic areas. In 2006, under the leadership of President Sanford J. Ungar, Goucher became the first college in the nation to require all undergraduates to study abroad at least once before graduation.
Goucher’s stunning 287-acre wooded campus in Towson, Maryland, a suburb ten miles north of Baltimore and within an hour’s drive of Washington, DC and Philadelphia, is home to impressive and new facilities. Committed to global education, the principles of diversity and inclusion, civic engagement, and environmental sustainability, Goucher has built an extremely strong, varied, and innovative tradition of excellence in liberal arts and sciences education. Goucher students go on to careers and lives of distinction in a range of fields.
