The Goucher Distinguished Scholar Award  was established in January 1997 as a new award to recognize the academic achievements of two Goucher students each year who are currently sophomores.

It is based on an outstanding academic record and proposal for a special project that is related to the student's academic work.  The scholarship awards $15,000 per year for two years of study at Goucher, plus an expense allowance up to $3,000 for these two years to be applied toward study or academically related travel abroad, an international internship, collaborative research with a faculty member, or other activities that would enrich the recipient's undergraduate studies.

Letters to qualified students (cumulative grade point average of 3.75 and rising junior status of no fewer than 57 semester hours completed by the end of the spring semester) are sent in February; proposals are reviewed and recipients are notified in late March.
