Healthy Living

The Healthy Living House will be housed in Sondheim for the 2012-2013 school year.  The Healthy Living House is an all suite community that provides students with an opportunity to choose a substance-free lifestyle and to live together in a supportive environment focusing on wellness.

Students who choose to live in this house agree to live a substance-free lifestyle in the house.  The use and possession of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs by all resident students and their guests is not permitted at any time in the house.

A substance-free environment is defined as one where the following is prohibited:

  • All use of cigarettes, cigars or burning tobacco in any form
  • Use and possession of alcohol, regardless of age
  • All drugs, which are already prohibited by state and/or Goucher College policy (i.e., use of marijuana, misuse and/or abuse of prescription drugs, etc.)

These requirements apply to all common areas, as well as private rooms and include use by residents and guests.  Additionally, residents of the Healthy Living House are required to attend two wellness programs per semester in order to remain as part of the Healthy Living community (attending more than two programs is definitely encouraged).  Failure to meet these requirements will result in the possible relocation of housing from Sondheim.

All residents of the Healthy Living House must be non-smokers.  This means that these individuals never smoke.  Students who smoke occasionally or only outside are considered smokers and may not reside in substance-free housing.

Language House

The Language House is a living and learning community that provides students with the opportunity to foster the learning of foreign languages and culture.  Speaking a foreign language and attending different foreign language and cultural events will be the central focus of programming within Language House.  Students who choose to live in this house agree to practice speaking a foreign language in the house.  All residents of the House must commit to improving their foreign language and cultural skills. Residents who reside in the Language House are required to attend 8 language tables per semester organized by the language coordinators. The Language House is located in Welsh Hall.

Green House

The Green House mission is to extend the environmentally sustainable visions of Goucher into campus housing to bring sustainability to all parts of the student’s life. Our house will be a place where like-minded people will support each other to practice eco-friendly habits.

Green House Leaders ask members to gauge and reduce the amount of energy we use, the waste we produce, and products we consume. Their hope is to become an aid to the various environmental action groups on campus in their endeavors.

Twice a month the Green House cooks a  dinner together using environmentally friendly methods and foods in addition to monthly meetings. The Green House is located on the 3rd floor of Robinson.

   Live Music House

The Live Music House is a community of musicians, poets, and artists interested in bringing music and spoken word to the Goucher community. Live Music House members organize events like Funk Fridays, open mics in the Gopher Hole, and members act as a house band for the some of Goucher’s large scale multicultural events.

Live Music house leaders have made connections with local musicians, enriching the college’s relationship with the Baltimore community. This community was created to bring together those students that have a love for live performance and a passion for music in its abilities to bring people together. The Live Music House is located on the 1st floor of Gallagher.

The Peace House

The Peace House at Goucher College allows students who are a community of activists and peace thinkers an opportunity to live in and to cultivate an environment of self-awareness and mutual support for the promotion of social justice. Each semester, members of the Peace House dedicate the term to an issue or project to promote and engage in social justice and activism.

Peace House members function as an affinity group, making most decisions through consensus, and agree to meet at least once a week, for a minimum of 90 minutes, in addition to informal weekly participation. Peace House members commit to living in an intentional community which demands a dedication to group work and conflict resolution.
