Political Action in the Wake of Citizens United

March 25, 2010 |

Goucher College is hosting “Political Action in the Wake of Citizens United,” a panel discussion about how campaigns are conducted in American politics. The event will be held on Thursday, March 25, at 6 p.m. in the Batza Room of the Athenaeum. It is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Nina Kasniunas at nina.kasniunas@goucher.edu or 410-337-3012 or Steven Klepper at steven.klepper@goucher.edu.

This past January, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Citizens United v. FEC that corporate funding of independent broadcasts in elections cannot be limited under the First Amendment of the Constitution. The panel will discuss the implications of Citizens United v. FEC, as well as the widespread reaction and how political action is changing in the wake of the ruling.

The panelists will be:
• Joe Crea, deputy director of communications and manager of digital operations of the Business Roundtable, a politically conservative lobbying organization composed of the CEOs of major corporations that works to promote pro-business public policy.

• Nina Therese Kasniunas, assistant professor of political science and international relations at Goucher. Kasniunas published “Interest Groups and the Future of Campaigns” in Campaigns on the Cutting Edge and “The Media and Civil Liberties” in Media Power, Media Politics. Kasniuas also recently published a book titled Campaign Rules: A 50 State Guide to Campaigns and Elections in America.

• Steven Klepper ’97, an associate at Kramon & Graham, P.A. law firm with a focus on insurance coverage and appellate advocacy. Klepper also teaches a course on the history of the United States Supreme Court as a part of the History Department at Goucher.

• James Kramon, a co-founder of Kramon & Graham, P.A. He was an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Maryland from 1971 through 1975, and he served the Maryland State Bar Association as chairman of the Special Committee on Law Practice Quality and as the vice chairman on the Committee on Ethics. He has written five books and more than 50 articles in legal and other publications.

This event is being sponsored by the Sarah T. Hughes Field Politics Center.
