A Moving Narrative: Facing Immigration

Release date: May 05, 2009 |

Goucher students interviewed and photographed local immigrants to create A Moving Narrative: Facing Immigration, an exhibition that will be on display in the college’s Geen Community Center May 5-8.

The exhibition opens Tuesday, May 5, with an open discussion “Who/What is an Immigrant?” at 6 p.m. and the unveiling of the portraits at 7 p.m. A reception will follow, and guests are encouraged to continue the conversation and meet the interviewees.

The exhibition and related events are free and open to public. For more information, contact Tamara Filipovic at 301-991-8442 or tamara.filipovic@goucher.edu or Amber Kepple Jones at 707-803-2728 or amber.kepplejones@goucher.edu.

Multiple 8x10 portraits of the immigrants — who come from Cameroon, El Salvador, Egypt, former East Germany, Georgia, Germany, Iran, Poland, Rwanda, South Korea, and Vietnam — will be presented along with stories written collaboratively by the students and the people they interviewed.

The project’s organizers hope the discussion and exhibition will encourage awareness and cross-cultural dialogue about immigrant identity within the Goucher and Greater Baltimore communities.

The discussion and portrait exhibition were funded by a Social Justice Grant given by the Goucher College SGA.
