2010-2011 Innovation Grant Winners

The President's Office is proud to announce the 2010-2011 academic year Innovation Grant winners.

For 13 years, the Innovation Grant Program has provided seed money to implement many exciting and effective campus projects proposed by Goucher students, faculty, and staff.

Past projects include Goucher's recycling and composting programs, the launch of new student publications, and the support and expansion of study-abroad opportunities.

Funded by the Office of the President, grants generally range between $200 and $5,000. The typical project is awarded between $1,000 to $2,000. This year, 25 project proposals were submitted.

The selection process was very competitive, but the following nine projects were chosen to receive Innovation Grants for this academic year:

Renovation of Hoffberger Courtyard

$2,400

Awarded to: Cynthia Kicklighter, assistant professor of biology, and Sarah Draude '11

Purpose: To transform the Hoffberger Courtyard into a useable space with outdoor furniture, a portable chalkboard, and landscaping.

 

Laundry Lines Across Campus             

$330

Awarded to: Linda Barone, project manager, Facilities Management Services, and Jennifer Jordan '11

Purpose: To provide students with an alternative and more environmentally friendly way to dry their clothes by installing drying racks in the residence hall laundry rooms.

 

Undergraduate Mentoring Program in the Chemical and Biological Sciences

$2,000

Awarded to: Janet Shambaugh, professor of biology; George Delahunty, professor of biology; George Greco, assistant professor of chemistry; and Kathleen Flanagan '13

Purpose: To establish a peer mentoring program for students in the Biology and Chemistry departments.

 

The Intrepid Dialectologist: Learning Spanish Through Dialects and Service

Awarded to: Florencia Cortes-Conde, assistant professor of Spanish

Purpose: To develop a new course at Goucher to provide students with the instruments they need to become dialectologists.

  

Goucher-Sponsored Music Night at the Hexagon Space

$1,150

Awarded to: Peter McCarthy, assistant to the college librarian

Purpose: To foster a greater sense of community between Goucher and Baltimore by partnering with local music and art venue the Hexagon Space on North Charles Street.

  

Peer Listening Program Pilot Training

$1,000

Awarded to: Roshelle Kades, graduate assistant in the Office of Community Living

Purpose: To support Goucher's new pilot peer listening program.

 

Archiving Stories of the Holocaust

$1,500

Awarded to: Uta Larkey, assistant professor, Modern Languages and Literatures

Purpose: To create a digital archive containing every survivor interview and student performance to date of the Oral History of Holocaust Survivors class.

 

Hoffberger Building Improvement Project

$2,300 

Awarded to: Jeff Bessen '13

Purpose: To hang student science-themed art and photography in Hoffberger Science Building.

 

Gopher Glassblowing

$300

Awarded to: Allyn Massey, associate professor of art, and Alex Bradley '14

Purpose: To host workshops this academic year that will teach students an introduction to basic glassblowing/lampworking.
