Discontinued Support for Explorer on Apple Computers

Release date: October 19, 2006 |

Goucher College Computing Services is discontinuing support for Microsoft Explorer on Apple computer systems as of October 19, 2006. The final decision on this was made as a result of some recent changes to the default home page of this browser: MSN.com. Microsoft made the browser incompatible with its own home page, which further ended their support of this brower which was officially unsupported by Microsoft in January, 2006.

Computing Services does not recommend that Explorer be used for any type of web browsing on an Apple computer. This browser is very dated and no longer supported by either Microsoft or Apple. Here is the official statement: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/internetexplorer/internetexplorer.aspx?pid=internetexplorer

Although  this browser has worked up until recently, changes in the MSN.com homepage have made Explorer incompatible. Explorer may work on some sites, however, it  is hard to tell which sites it works on and which it does not. The change in  http://www.msn.com has occurred within the last couple weeks.

Computing Services strongly recommends that all Mac users install the latest version of Firefox for all web browsing. This is a first-class browser and works very well on Mac OS X. It can be downloaded for free from http://www.getfirefox.com.
